Prysmian's Downhole Technology offers a wide range of downhole cables, protectors, control lines, flatpacks, services, and ancillaries to meet all your needs.
The product portfolio is backed by exceptional design expertise and global manufacturing capability. Prysmian Downhole Technology provides solutions for the most challenging downhole applications.
History
Prysmian Downhole Technology (PDT) is uniquely positioned to fulfill all your downhole needs.
The company was formed through the integration of two industry pioneers: Draka, which developed the world's first tubing-encapsulated cable (TEC) over 30 years ago, and Gulf Coast Downhole Technologies (GCDT), which specializes in addressing the challenges faced by operators and oil field service companies. PDT offers innovative products, specialized design expertise, and unmatched manufacturing capabilities that set us apart in the industry. Our solutions are tailored to meet the specific requirements of operators and service companies, ranging from conventional systems to the most demanding applications.
Today, PDT can fulfill your downhole cabling needs with a range of purpose-built designs manufactured to the highest standards.
Our portfolio includes:
- Downhole Cables: TEC (for instrumentation and power), TEF (for fiber optic), and hybrid cables (electro/optical)
- Protectors: clamping and cable protection solutions
- Control Lines: pressure tubes for harsh environment applications such as chemical injection or well monitoring
- Flatpacks: single and dual pass encapsulation featuring Prysmian Safety-Strip® technology
- Services and Ancillaries: flush and fill, fluid cleanliness, and protector product interface testing, customer inventory management
TEC (Instrumentation & Power Cables)
Tubing Encased Cable (TEC) is specifically designed and manufactured to endure the harsh conditions commonly found in the oil and gas industry. This cable can be used for data transmission in applications such as downhole gauges, for powering larger cores, or for a combination of both.
TEF (Fiber Optic Cables)
Hybrid cables are custom-designed electro-optical cables tailored to meet specific customer requirements. There are two primary design methods:
- Two separate tubes—one for electrical (TEC) and one for optical (TEF)—placed side by side in a flat pack.
- A single tube that combines a conductor twisted with fiber, enclosed in a metal tube (FIMT).
Control Lines
This range includes control lines (hydraulic tubing) designed for use in harsh environments, such as those encountered during chemical injection or well monitoring. These applications require strength, corrosion resistance, and reliability. PDT’s control lines are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed ASTM standards.
Prysmian Downhole Technology offers four types of control lines, with each manufacturing process providing its own advantages, balancing cost-effectiveness with technical requirements.
Hybrid Cables
This range comprises cables that combine instrument, power, and fiber optic cables in a single package, eliminating the need for multiple cables or extra space in the wellhead.
The PDT team can recommend designs that meet an application's operating parameters and the required surface and downhole interfaces. Additionally, we provide a custom design service to address situations where a standard design does not fulfill an application's specific needs.
Flatpacks
Flatpacks are designed to simplify installation and reduce the number of installation spooler units needed during well completion. They come in a variety of configurations, including options for single-pass and dual-pass encapsulation for enhanced protection. Individual components and tubes can be color-coded and custom-printed for easy identification. If additional crush resistance is required, bumper bars and/or wire rope can be specified.
Safety-Strip®
The standard PDT flatpack design utilizes the patented Safety-Strip® encapsulation. This encapsulation includes a continuous tear cord, allowing for the safe and quick removal of the outer jacket without risking damage to the underlying tube. It greatly enhances operator safety by eliminating the need for open blades or similar mechanical devices to strip the cable.
Protectors
Protectors are designed to safeguard all control lines and cables along the entire length of the production string, significantly reducing the risk of damage to the cable, control lines, or flatpacks. PDT’s Protector portfolio features clamping and cable protection solutions that shield cables from lateral, axial, and rotational forces in downhole applications. In addition to our standard cross-coupling range, PDT develops custom solutions tailored for demanding situations.
