Cable-in-Conduit Solutions

OVERVIEW

Duct Cable Solutions for Reliable Underground Protection

Ducted systems provide enhanced mechanical protection for cables in direct burial applications during installation and over the long term, ensuring a secure and durable solution. They are commonly used for utilities (both primary and secondary distribution), highway lighting, airport lighting, parking lots, and sports complexes. Ducted systems also protect cables from physical damage and corrosive underground elements, while simplifying the process of cable replacement, significantly enhancing their long-term advantages.

Prysmian offers a variety of duct options for cable installations that require additional physical, mechanical, or corrosive protection, whether for direct burial or aerial installations. Our Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) duct, equipped with advanced safety features, is an ideal solution for facilities where flammability and smoke generation are concerns. The duct can be supplied empty, with a pull line, or with wires pre-installed.

Preinstalled Cable-in-Conduit Solutions

The duct can be preinstalled with various types of cables, including THHN/THWN, EPR-USE, XHHW-2, RHH/RHW-2, XLP-USE, L-824B or Type C airport lighting cable, fiber-optic cable, twisted-pair and coaxial communication cables, aluminum conductors, and medium-voltage cables.

Cable-in-Conduit solutions offer several advantages over traditional PVC conduit:

  • Higher material costs are offset by lower installation costs.
  • There is no need for expensive pulling or blowing equipment. Installation can be completed with just two people instead of three or more.
  • The duct can be placed directly from the reel, eliminating the need to handle sticks of pipe. No special bedding material is required.
  • There are no joints or splices.
  • Less waste is generated since the duct can be cut to the exact length needed. The lower coefficient of friction improves performance.
  • There is better cold impact resistance.
  • The bend performance is superior. Shipment protection is improved, reducing the risk of damage from mishandled reels.
  • Installation protection is enhanced, preventing damage during the installation process.
  • It provides a lifetime raceway for maintenance, as opposed to direct buried cable.

FAQs

What are ducted cable systems?

Ducted cable systems use protective conduits or ducts to house and route cables between access points instead of placing the cable directly in soil or concrete. This enclosed raceway creates a managed path for installation, inspection, and future replacement of the cables.

Why use ducts instead of direct burial for cables?

Using ducts instead of direct burial shields cables from impact, abrasion, and corrosive underground conditions, which can extend service life and improve network reliability. Ducts also allow damaged or obsolete cables to be removed and replaced without major excavation, reducing maintenance time, disruption, and total lifecycle cost.

What applications are ducted systems best suited for?

Ducted systems are especially suited for underground utility distribution, highway and street lighting, airport lighting circuits, parking facilities, and sports or campus complexes where long runs and high reliability are required. They are also a strong choice in environments that expect future capacity increases or technology upgrades, since additional or replacement cables can be installed through existing duct pathways.

How do ducts provide extra protection for cables?

Ducts create a robust physical barrier around the cable that resists crushing, impact, and shifting backfill, while isolating the cable from moisture and chemically aggressive soils. Their smoother internal surface and controlled bend geometry reduce friction and mechanical stress during installation, helping protect cable jackets and insulation from damage.

How can I place an order with Prysmian?

Orders and project-specific configurations can be arranged through Prysmian’s regional sales team or authorized distribution partners, who can also assist with duct sizing, cable selection, and preinstalled combinations for your application.
