Prysmian Downhole Technology

Integrated Solutions for the Toughest Downhole Applications

Prysmian's Downhole Technology offers a comprehensive range of downhole cables, protectors, control lines, flatpacks, services, and ancillary products to meet your needs. Our product portfolio is backed by exceptional design expertise and a robust global manufacturing capability, enabling us to deliver solutions for the most demanding downhole applications.

History

The company was formed through the integration of two industry pioneers: Draka, recognized for creating the world's first tubing-encapsulated cable (TEC) over 30 years ago, and Gulf Coast Downhole Technologies (GCDT), which focuses on addressing the challenges faced by operators and oilfield service companies. Prysmian Downhole Technology (PDT) offers innovative products, specialized design expertise, and unmatched manufacturing capabilities that set us apart in the industry. Our solutions are tailored to meet the specific requirements of operators and service companies, covering everything from conventional systems to the most demanding applications.

Present Day

PDT is fully equipped to satisfy your downhole cabling needs with a variety of specially designed products manufactured to the highest standards. Our portfolio includes:

  • Downhole Cables: TEC cables for instrumentation and power, TEF cables for fiber optics, and hybrid cables that combine both electrical and optical functions.
  • Protectors: Solutions for clamping and cable protection.
  • Control Lines: Pressure tubes designed for harsh environments, suitable for applications like chemical injection and well monitoring.
  • Flatpacks: Single and dual-pass encapsulations utilizing Prysmian Safety-Strip® technology.
  • Services and Ancillaries: We provide services such as flushing and filling, fluid cleanliness assessments, product interface testing for protectors, and customer inventory management. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality solutions customized to your downhole requirements.

Prysmian Downhole Technology Cable Solutions

Tubing Encased Cable (TEC) is specifically designed and manufactured to endure the harsh conditions commonly found in the oil and gas industry. This cable is ideal for data transmission in various applications, including downhole gauges and powering larger cores, or even serving both functions simultaneously.

Hybrid cables custom-designed electro-optical cables tailored to meet specific customer requirements. There are two primary design methods:

  1. Two Separate Tubes: One tube is dedicated to electrical conductors (TEC), while the other is for optical fibers (TEF). These tubes are positioned side by side in a flat pack.
  2. Single Tube: This design combines a twisted conductor and fiber, all enclosed within a metal tube (FIMT).

These methods ensure that the unique needs of each customer are effectively addressed.

This range includes control lines (hydraulic tubing) specifically designed for harsh environments, such as those encountered during chemical injection or well monitoring. These applications require strength, corrosion resistance, and reliability. PDT’s control lines are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed ASTM standards.

Prysmian Downhole Technology offers four types of control lines, each produced using a unique manufacturing process. This variety provides distinct advantages, balancing cost-effectiveness with technical requirements.

This product range offers cables that combine instrumentation, power, and fiber optic cables into a single package. This design reduces the need for multiple cables and saves space at the wellhead.

The PDT team can recommend designs tailored to your application's operating parameters and the necessary surface and downhole interfaces. We also provide custom design services for cases where standard designs do not meet specific application requirements.

Flatpacks are designed to simplify installation and reduce the number of spooler units required during well completion. They come in various configurations, including single-pass and dual-pass encapsulation, which offer enhanced protection. Furthermore, individual components and tubes can be color-coded and labeled for easy identification. If additional crush resistance is needed, options like bumper bars and wire ropes can be included.

Safety-Strip®

The standard PDT flatpack design incorporates the patented Safety-Strip® encapsulation. This design features a continuous tear cord that enables the safe and quick removal of the outer jacket without damaging the inner tube. This innovation significantly enhances operator safety by eliminating the need for open blades or other mechanical tools for stripping the cable.

Protectors are designed to safeguard all control lines and cables throughout the entire length of the production string. This significantly reduces the risk of damage to cables, control lines, or flatpacks. PDT’s Protector portfolio includes clamping and cable protection solutions that shield cables from lateral, axial, and rotational forces in downhole applications. In addition to our standard cross-coupling range, PDT also develops custom solutions tailored to meet specific and demanding situations.
