Manufacturers have typically used a lead sheath and metal armor to protect cables in aggressive environments with high mechanical stresses. While effective, these added protections increase the cable's weight and reduce installation flexibility.

Prysmian's AIRGUARD® avoids issues by combining our patented AIRBAG™ and DRYLAM® technologies. This high-performance solution reduces cable diameter and weight while providing exceptional protection against fluid penetration, chemical aggression, and mechanical shocks.

 

The lack of a lead sheath and metal armor means that AIRGUARD® has a more compact design and is less rigid, making installation easier. With a reduced diameter, more cable can fit on a standard cable drum, which is ideal for longer cable lengths and requires fewer splice joints.

 

The AIRGUARD® product range includes solutions for Medium Voltage, Low Voltage, Instrumentation, and Control cable applications. Therefore, it serves as an effective alternative to cables in conduit systems and armored cables. It can also be used for horizontal and vertical feeders, branch circuits, and general industrial power applications. AIRGUARD® power cables are UL-approved for installation in trays, raceways, aerial, and direct buried environments.

Chemical resistance 
The hydrocarbon-blocking layer, combined with a metallic shield, prevents the attack of moisture and liquids such as hydrocarbons, solvents, acids and bases.

 

Mechanical protection 
The AIRBAG™ layer has been proven in millions of meters of installed cable to absorb physical shock and reduce the damage to a cable core.

 

Electrical properties 
The metallic layer provides electromagnetic shielding and a current-carrying path for harmonics found with variable frequency drive motors.

 

Stripability
The unique design and strategically placed rip cords allow AIRGUARD® cables to be stripped much faster than metal-clad cables, without worrying about nicked or damaged phase conductors.
