Covered Overhead Conductor — Line Wire (Canada)
Weatherproof line wire consists of a single conductor encased in either Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). The conductors can be compact or consist of concentric strands of Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR), or be solid, compact, or concentric-strand copper. This weatherproof line wire meets the requirements of CSA C68.9 and the ANSI/ICEA S-70-547 specifications, as applicable.
Conductors
Various types of conductors are available, including solid or stranded MHD copper and compact or concentric high-density (HD) aluminum, as well as aluminum alloy or ACSR options.
The conductors comply with CSA C49.2, CAN/CSA C61089, ASTM B3, B8, B231, B232, B400, or B496, as applicable. For aluminum and ACSR conductors, the outer layer of strands has a right-hand lay, while for copper conductors, the outer layer has a left-hand lay.
For products made with aluminum conductors, a corrosion-resistant inhibitor treatment is available.
Covering
The coverings available are black Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or black extruded Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). Please note that there is no voltage rating associated with this wire.
Features and Benefits
The covering offers mechanical protection for the conductor and is resistant to both weathering and chemicals. If the conductors accidentally come into contact due to factors such as high winds, falling tree limbs, or other disturbances, the covering helps prevent short circuits and reduces the risk of the conductors welding together.
Applications
Weatherproof line wire is utilized for overhead transmission and distribution lines. It is important to note that covered line wire is not electrically insulated; therefore, it must be installed on insulators. Users should treat the line wire as a bare conductor to ensure personal safety.
