Covered Overhead Conductor — Line Wire (US)
Weatherproof line wire consists of a single conductor that is covered with either Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). The conductors can be made from compressed or concentric strands of Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR), All Aluminum Conductor (AAC), or solid copper, whether compressed or in concentric strands. This weatherproof line wire complies with the ANSI/ICEA S-70-547 standards.
Conductors
Various types of conductors are available, including solid or stranded MHD copper, compressed or concentric high-density aluminum, aluminum alloy, or ACSR. These conductors meet the requirements of ASTM standards B3, B8, B231, B232, B400, or B496, as applicable. For aluminum and ACSR conductors, the outer layer of strands is laid in a right-hand direction, while copper conductors have a left-hand lay for their outer layer of strands. Additionally, products made with aluminum conductors can be treated with a corrosion-resistant inhibitor.
Covering
The coverings available are black Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or black extruded Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE). Please note that this product has no voltage rating.
Features and Benefits
The covering provides mechanical protection for the conductor and is resistant to weathering and chemicals. If the conductors come into contact due to high winds, falling tree limbs, or other disturbances, the covering helps prevent short circuits and reduces the likelihood of the conductors welding together.
Applications
Weatherproof line wire is designed for use in overhead transmission and distribution lines. It is important to note that covered line wire is not an electrically insulated cable. Therefore, it should always be installed on insulators, and users must treat the line wire as a bare conductor to ensure personal safety.
