Product description

Bare all-aluminum 1350 conductors, known as A1 or ASC (Aluminum Stranded Conductor), are concentric-lay-stranded conductors. They consist of one or more layers of wire wrapped helically around a straight, round central wire. Each successive layer contains six more wires than the layer beneath it, enhancing flexibility for a given cross-sectional area. 

A1 or ASC conductors are manufactured according to the latest applicable version of CAN/CSA C61089. These conductors comply with CSA reference standards, and their design—specifically the size and configuration of the strands—is similar to that outlined in ASTM B231. However, there are differences in the methods used to calculate rated strength and DC resistance values. 

Common strand configurations include 7, 19, 37, 61, and 91. The sizes and strandings provided in the following sections are typical examples used in overhead lines, and metric sizes (in mm²) are also available.

Class AA strandings are designed for bare overhead power lines. In these strandings, the outer layer is laid in a right-handed direction, which is typically reversed in the subsequent layers. The temper used for Class AA strandings is full-hard drawn (H19). 

Class A strandings are primarily used for overhead conductors that will be covered with weather-resistant materials. These strandings offer greater flexibility than Class AA. The outer layer is also laid in a right-handed direction, and the temper is generally H19. As with Class AA, the layers in Class A strandings are normally laid in a reverse manner for successive layers.

 

Features and Benefits

Optimum economy is achieved because the lighter weight results in lower unit length costs, simpler handling during installation, and easier fittings. All-aluminum conductors possess high corrosion resistance due to their uniform construction.

 

Applications

Stranded bare A1 or ASC 1350 all-aluminum conductors are used for overhead line installations where design parameters do not require the higher strength or temperature ratings provided by ACSR, ACSS or other type of bare conductor.
