TransPowr® AAAC Bare Overhead Conductor (US)
AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor) is a high-strength aluminum alloy designed as a concentric-lay-stranded conductor. It closely resembles the construction and appearance of the AAC (All-Aluminum Conductor).
The AAAC conductor is manufactured in accordance with the latest ASTM B399 standards. It is made from a heat-treated, high-strength 6201-T81 aluminum-magnesium silicide alloy.
The aluminum strands are arranged in a concentric-strand configuration, typically consisting of 7, 19, 37, or more wires. These sizes and strand configurations are commonly used in overhead power lines. Additionally, metric sizes are available.
Features and Benefits
- Aluminum alloy conductors offer several advantages over ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) or all-aluminum conductors.
- Lower power losses compared to equivalent single-layer aluminum ACSR conductors, as the inductive effect of the steel core in ACSR is eliminated.
- Simpler fittings are required compared to those needed for ACSR.
- Excellent corrosion resistance even in environments prone to galvanic corrosion, which can affect ACSR.
- Strength and sag characteristics are comparable to those of equivalent 6/1 and 26/7 ACSR conductors.
- The outside diameters are the same as standard ACSR conductors, allowing for the interchangeability of fittings.
- Greater resistance to abrasion than that of 1350 wires found in all-aluminum or ACSR conductors.
Applications
AAAC (All-Aluminum Alloy Conductors) are commonly used for overhead distribution and transmission lines near ocean coastlines, where the corrosion of steel in ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) constructions can pose significant issues.
These aluminum alloy conductors are favored over single-layer ACSR conductors (ranging from #6 to #4/0 AWG) to minimize power losses in overhead distribution and transmission lines. By eliminating the inductive effect of the ACSR's steel core, the operating efficiency of the line is significantly improved.
