TransPowr® AAC/TW Bare Overhead Conductor (Canada)
TransPowr® AAC/TW is a trapezoidal 1350 H19 aluminum (AAC) concentric-lay-stranded conductor. The aluminum strands are shaped like trapezoids, which allows for a more compact arrangement of the aluminum wires.
Compared with conventional round conductors, designs that maintain the same circular-mil aluminum cross-sectional area result in a TW conductor that is 10 to 15 percent smaller in overall diameter. Conversely, when designs keep the same overall diameter as a conventional round conductor, the TW conductor can contain 20 to 25 percent more aluminum in its cross-sectional area.
These AAC/TW conductors are manufactured in accordance with the latest ASTM B778 standards. The conductor features 2, 3, 4, or 5 layers of 1350-H19 aluminum wires. The sizes and configurations mentioned here and on the following pages are examples typically used in overhead line applications.
Features and Benefits
TransPowr AAC/TW conductors have a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. Operating the conductor at elevated temperatures can increase its sag properties and reduce its tensile strength.
AAC/TW conductors, which are made from an equivalent circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum, have a smaller overall diameter compared to traditional round wire AAC conductors. This reduced diameter minimizes the effects of ice and wind loading on the conductor.
Additionally, AAC/TW conductors with an equivalent overall diameter provide a greater aluminum cross-sectional area, significantly increasing the conductor's current-carrying capacity.
Applications
Trapezoidal 1350 H19 aluminum conductors (AAC/TW) are used for overhead transmission lines where the design parameters do not necessitate the higher strength or temperature ratings offered by ACSR, ACSS, or other types of conductors.
