TransPowr® AAC/TW Bare Overhead Conductor (US)
TransPowr® AAC/TW is a trapezoidal 1350 H19 aluminum (AAC) conductor that features concentric-lay stranded construction. The aluminum strands used in this conductor are trapezoidal in shape. This wedge-shaped design allows for a more compact arrangement of the aluminum wires.
When comparing with conventional round conductors, designs that maintain the same circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum result in a TW conductor that is 10 to 15 percent smaller in overall diameter. Conversely, designs that keep the same overall diameter as a conventional round conductor allow for a TW conductor that contains 20 to 25 percent more aluminum cross-sectional area.
The AAC/TW conductors are manufactured in accordance with the latest ASTM B778 standards. Depending on the configuration, the conductor can consist of two, three, four, or five layers of 1350-H19 aluminum wires. The sizes and constructions listed on this and the following pages are examples of those used in overhead lines.
Features and Benefits
The TransPowr AAC/TW conductor has a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. Operating the conductor at elevated temperatures may increase sag and reduce its rated tensile strength.
AAC/TW conductors, which are designed to have an equivalent aluminum circular-mil cross-sectional area, are smaller in overall diameter compared to conventional round-wire AAC conductors. This reduced diameter minimizes the impact of ice and wind loading on the conductor.
Additionally, AAC/TW conductors that are constructed to have an equivalent overall diameter allow for a greater circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum within the conductor. This design not only reduces power loss during day-to-day operations but also significantly increases the conductor's current-carrying capacity.
Applications
Trapezoidal 1350 H19 aluminum conductors (AAC/TW) are utilized for overhead transmission lines where the design specifications do not necessitate the higher strength or temperature ratings offered by ACSR, ACSS, or other types of conductors.
