TransPowr® ACCC®/TW Bare Overhead Conductor (Canada)
TransPowr® ACCC®/TW is a specialized aluminum conductor featuring a composite core and a trapezoidal, concentric-lay-stranded design. The unique trapezoidal shape of the aluminum strands allows for a more efficient arrangement of the wires. ACCC/TW conductors are designed to maintain the same overall diameter as traditional round wire ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced).
The compact design of the trapezoidal conductors, combined with a smaller composite core, gives the TW conductor approximately 28% more aluminum cross-sectional area compared to ACSR. This innovative design adheres to the standards outlined in ASTM B857 (Shaped Wire Compact Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductors, Coated-Steel Supported, ACSS/TW). Furthermore, the annealed aluminum strand wires comply with ASTM B609. The core, which serves as a strength member, consists of a proprietary high-strength carbon and glass fiber composite, in accordance with ASTM B987, and is surrounded by two, three, or four layers of annealed 1350 aluminum wire.
Features and Benefits
- Doubles the current-carrying capacity compared to conventional ACSR. This can allow a utility to re-conductor existing pathways without structural modifications.
- It can be operated to 180°C, whereas the existing ACSR has a conventional 75°C limit.
- The composite core has a very low thermal expansion coefficient, which virtually eliminates high-temperature sag problems. The conductor is not affected by long-term creep of the aluminum.
- The composite core controls the high-temperature sag limits.
- The overall mass (weight) of the ACCC/TW conductor, even with the increased aluminum content, can be lighter than the original ACSR conductor it is replacing.
- Uses conventional installation methods and tools familiar to transmission line construction crews.
- It may reduce construction costs by allowing the use of fewer support structures. The conductor’s higher strength allows longer spans.
- The composite core resists environmental degradation. It will not rust, corrode or cause electrolysis with aluminum conductors or other components.
- With its higher aluminum content, it can offer higher operating efficiency, helping reduce power generation and transmission costs.
Applications
TransPowr ACCC/TW conductors are designed for overhead power distribution and transmission lines. They are particularly beneficial for reconductoring applications that require minimal thermal sag without structural modifications.
