TransPowr® ACSR Bare Overhead Conductor (US)
ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) is a type of conductor made from a composite, concentric-lay-stranded design. These conductors are manufactured in compliance with the latest version of ASTM B232 standards. At the core of the conductor, there are one or more strands of steel, around which multiple layers of aluminum 1350-H19 wires are stranded. The steel core can consist of a single strand or a concentric assembly of steel wires, typically including 7, 19, 37, or more wires. There are many possible combinations of aluminum and steel strand configurations. The sizes and stranding options listed on the following pages are the most commonly used for overhead power lines.
Features and Benefits
ACSR conductors are well-known for their economy, reliability, and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. They combine the lightweight, high conductivity of aluminum with the tensile strength and durability of steel. In overhead line designs, this combination enables higher tension, reduced sag, and longer spans than most other conductors.
The steel strands in ACSR conductors serve as mechanical reinforcement. The accompanying illustrations depict some common configurations of these strandings.
To protect the steel core wires from corrosion, they are galvanized. The standard Class A zinc coating is usually sufficient for typical environmental conditions. For enhanced protection, a Class C galvanized coating can be specified. Additionally, options include High-Strength (/GA3), Extra-High-Strength (/GA4), and Ultra-High-Strength (/GA5) steel cores with Class A galvanizing, as well as High-Strength (/MA3), Extra-High-Strength (/MA4), and Ultra-High-Strength (/MA5) steel cores with a Class A zinc-aluminum-5% mischmetal coating. There is also a version available with a corrosion inhibitor treatment applied to the central steel component.

ACSR cables are widely utilized in overhead distribution and transmission lines.
