TransPowr® ACSR/T2® Bare Overhead Conductor (US)
ACSR/T-2® consists of two stranded aluminum conductors that are reinforced with steel, twisted around each other at intervals of nine feet. These conductors are manufactured in accordance with the latest applicable version of ASTM B911. The sizes and strand configurations presented on the following pages are the most commonly used for overhead power lines. The steel core wires are protected through galvanizing, aluminizing, or aluminum cladding. For typical environments, a standard Class A zinc coating is usually sufficient. For enhanced protection, Class B and C galvanized coatings, as well as aluminized or aluminum-clad steel cores, can be specified.
Features and Benefits
The ACSR/T-2 conductor is designed to resist wind-induced motion in two key ways. First, its constantly varying diameter prevents the buildup of resonant vibrations along the line. Second, its low torsional stiffness diminishes the wind forces that cause motion, rendering them ineffective. These mechanical properties help eliminate galloping, reduce aeolian vibration, and control oscillation between sub-conductors. Additionally, ACSR/T-2 can lower structural costs by allowing higher conductor tensions, resulting in reduced sag and longer spans. Right-of-way costs may also decrease with compact line designs. From an electrical perspective, ACSR/T-2 operates at lower temperatures and has a lower AC resistance compared to a single conventional conductor with the same aluminum area. It can also be installed using many of the same methods and equipment as standard round conductors.
Applications
ACSR/T-2 conductors are suitable for overhead distribution and transmission lines that are susceptible to damage from wind-induced motion.
