TransPowr® ACSR/TW Bare Overhead Conductor (Canada)
TransPowr® ACSR/TW is a trapezoidal aluminum conductor that is steel-reinforced and has a concentric lay-stranded design. The aluminum strands are trapezoidal, allowing a more compact arrangement of the wires.
Compared with conventional round conductors with the same circular-mil aluminum cross-sectional area, the TW conductor achieves an overall diameter that is 10 to 15 percent smaller. Conversely, if a TW conductor is designed to have the same overall diameter as a conventional round conductor, it provides 20 to 25 percent more aluminum cross-sectional area.
The ACSR/TW conductors are produced in compliance with the latest requirements of ASTM B779. The central core of the conductor consists of steel strands arranged in concentric layers of 7, 19, or more wires. Surrounding this core are two, three, or four layers of 1350-H19 aluminum wires, allowing numerous combinations of aluminum and steel strands and layers.
The sizes and constructions presented on the following pages are common examples used in overhead power lines. For ACSR/TW conductors, the standard Class A galvanized coating is typically sufficient for regular environmental conditions.
Features and Benefits
TransPowr ACSR/TW conductors have a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. In addition, ACSR and ACSR/TW conductors are recognized in the industry for having a maximum short-duration operating temperature rating of 100°C. However, operating the conductor at elevated temperatures may increase its sag properties and reduce its rated tensile strength.
TransPowr ACSR/TW conductors are known for their cost-effectiveness, reliability, and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. When comparing ACSR/TW conductors with an equivalent aluminum circular-mil cross-sectional area, they have a smaller overall diameter than conventional round-wire ACSR conductors. This reduced diameter decreases the impact of ice and wind loading on the conductor. ACSR/TW conductors with an equivalent overall diameter provide a greater aluminum circular-mil cross-sectional area, resulting in a significant increase in current-carrying capacity.
Applications
Trapezoidal Aluminum Conductors with Steel Reinforcement (ACSR/TW) are utilized for overhead transmission lines.
