TransPowr® ACSS Bare Overhead Conductor (Canada)
ACSS (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported) is a type of cable composed of concentric layers of stranded wires. The conductors are produced in accordance with the latest version of ASTM B856. The central core of the cable is formed by steel strands, around which one or more layers of aluminum 1350-O wires are stranded. The “O” temper of the aluminum, which means it is fully annealed or in a soft state, ensures that the mechanical load is predominantly supported by the steel core.
Standard ACSS designs feature a regular-strength Class A zinc-aluminum mischmetal alloy-coated steel core (designated as /MA2). The steel core can be made of 7, 19, 37, or more wires, depending on the design specifications.
Features and Benefits
ACSS conductors are comparable to conventional ACSR conductors but have several key advantages. They can operate continuously at high temperatures up to 250°C without sustaining damage, thereby increasing their current-carrying capacity. Additionally, ACSS conductors experience less sag under emergency electrical loads than ACSR conductors. They are self-damping, meaning their final sag is not influenced by long-term creep in the aluminum.
Applications
ACSS is commonly used for overhead transmission lines. It is particularly beneficial in reconductoring applications that require higher current capacities while maintaining existing tensions and clearances. Additionally, it can be advantageous for new line installations where structures can be economically designed due to reduced sag. ACSS is also suitable for new lines that need to handle high emergency loadings and for lines that experience issues with aeolian vibration.
