TransPowr® ACSS Bare Overhead Conductor (US)
ACSS (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported) is a type of composite cable featuring a concentric-layer stranded design. The conductors are produced in accordance with the latest version of ASTM B856 standards. At the center of the cable is a core made of steel strands, around which one or more layers of aluminum 1350-O wires are stranded. The "O" temper of the aluminum, which is fully annealed or soft, ensures that most or all of the mechanical load on the ACSS is supported by the steel core.
Standard ACSS cables are constructed with a regular-strength Class A zinc-aluminum alloy-coated steel core (specifically, the /MA2 type), which contains 5% aluminum and mischmetal. The steel core can consist of 7, 19, or 37 wires, or even more, depending on the specific design requirements.
Features and Benefits
ACSS conductors are similar to conventional ACSR conductors, but they offer several significant advantages. ACSS can operate continuously at high temperatures up to 250 °C without sustaining damage, thereby increasing its current-carrying capacity. Additionally, ACSS experiences less sag under emergency electrical loads compared to ACSR. It is self-damping, meaning its final sag is not affected by long-term creep in the aluminum.
Applications
ACSS is utilized for overhead transmission lines. It is particularly beneficial in the following situations: reconductoring applications that require increased current with existing tensions and clearances; new line installations where structures can be optimized due to reduced sag; new line applications that need to handle high emergency loadings; and lines that experience issues with aeolian vibration.
