TransPowr® ACSS/TW Bare Overhead Conductor (Canada)
TransPowr® ACSR/TW is a steel-reinforced, trapezoidal aluminum conductor with a concentric lay-stranding design. The aluminum strands have a trapezoidal shape, allowing for a more compact arrangement of the wires.
When the conductor design maintains the same circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum as a conventional round conductor, the ACSR/TW conductor has an overall diameter that is 10 to 15 percent smaller. Conversely, if the design maintains the overall diameter of a conventional round conductor, the ACSR/TW conductor can contain 20 to 25 percent more aluminum cross-sectional area.
These conductors are manufactured in accordance with the latest requirements outlined in ASTM B779. The steel strands serve as the central core, around which two, three, or four layers of aluminum 1350-H19 wires are stranded. The steel core may be made of a concentric stranded cable consisting of 7, 19, or more wires. There are numerous combinations of aluminum and steel strands and layers that can be used.
The sizes and construction methods mentioned in the following pages are common examples utilized in overhead lines. For ACSR/TW conductors, a standard Class A galvanized coating is typically sufficient for ordinary environmental conditions.
Features and Benefits
TransPowr ACSR/TW conductors have a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. They also have an industry-accepted maximum operating temperature rating of 100°C for short durations. However, operating the conductor at higher temperatures may increase sag and reduce its rated tensile strength.
These conductors are well-regarded for their economy, reliability, and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. ACSR/TW conductors, which have an equivalent circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum, are smaller in overall diameter compared to traditional round-wire ACSR conductors. This reduced diameter minimizes the impact of ice and wind loading on the conductor. Additionally, ACSR/TW conductors designed to maintain an equivalent overall diameter provide a greater aluminum circular-mil cross-sectional area, significantly increasing the conductor's current-carrying capacity.
Applications
