FLAT-FLEX® Festooning Cable
FLAT-FLEX® Festooning Cable is designed for use in festoon systems that provide electrical power and control to cranes, hoists, and other equipment that moves laterally. These cables are ideal for applications with limited space because they can be stacked, and they are suitable for scenarios requiring extreme flexibility, with a recommended bend radius of 3 to 5 times the cable diameter.
FLAT-FLEX cables are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and operate effectively in temperatures from -40°C to 105°C. However, they are not recommended for severe flexing or impact when temperatures drop below -10°C. For applications involving severe flexing at temperatures below -10°C, it is advisable to use FLAT-FLEX Neoprene Festoon Cables.
Construction Options
FLAT-FLEX® cables are designed and manufactured in a variety of alternative constructions for specific applications.
Options include:
- Coaxial
- Fiber optic
- Twisted shielded pairs
- Composite conductors
Design Parameters
Conductors: The conductors are made from extra-flexible stranding—Class M for 16 and 14 AWG and Class K for 12 AWG and larger. They are constructed from soft-drawn, uncoated copper in accordance with ASTM B-3, ASTM B-172, UL-62, and CSA Electrical Bulletin 1447. This design ensures high flexibility and extended service life in festooning applications.
Insulation: The insulation is color-coded and made of flame- and oil-resistant PVC rated for 105°C, in accordance with UL-62 and CSA FT-1 standards. This insulation allows easy identification of conductors and is suitable for use in oil- and chemical-exposed environments, offering a higher ampacity rating.
Cabling: The cabling features a flat, parallel conductor grouping with one rip cord per group and webbing between groups. This design facilitates stacking multiple cables in tight spaces, improves stability outdoors against crosswinds, preserves cable integrity, reduces conductor stress to extend flex life, and enables easy jacket stripping.
Jacket: Available in yellow or black, the jacket is made from flame- and oil-resistant PVC that conforms to UL VW-1 and CSA FT-1 standards. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use in environments that contain oil and chemicals.
