Prysmian Downhole Technology
Downhole Technology Solutions
Integrated Solutions for the Toughest Downhole Applications
Prysmian's Downhole Technology provides a comprehensive range of downhole cables, protectors, control lines, flatpacks, services, and ancillary products to meet all your needs. Our product portfolio is supported by outstanding design expertise and a robust global manufacturing capability. Prysmian Downhole Technology delivers solutions for the most demanding downhole applications.
History
The company was established through the integration of two industry pioneers: Draka, known for creating the world’s first tubing-encapsulated cable (TEC) over 30 years ago, and Gulf Coast Downhole Technologies (GCDT), which specializes in addressing the challenges faced by operators and oil field service companies. PDT offers innovative products, specialized design expertise, and unmatched manufacturing capabilities that distinguish us in the industry. Our solutions are customized to meet the specific requirements of operators and service companies, ranging from conventional systems to the most demanding applications.
Present Day
PDT is equipped to meet your downhole cabling needs with a variety of specially designed products manufactured to the highest standards. Our portfolio includes:
- Downhole Cables: TEC cables for instrumentation and power, TEF cables for fiber optics, and hybrid cables that combine both electrical and optical functions.
- Protectors: Solutions for clamping and cable protection.
- Control Lines: Pressure tubes designed for harsh environments, suitable for applications like chemical injection and well monitoring.
- Flatpacks: Single and dual-pass encapsulation that utilizes Prysmian Safety-Strip® technology.
- Services and Ancillaries:
We offer services such as flushing and filling, fluid cleanliness assessments, protector product interface testing, and customer inventory management. We are committed to providing high-quality solutions tailored to your downhole requirements.
TEC (Instrumentation & Power Cables)
Tubing Encased Cable (TEC) is specially designed and manufactured to withstand the harsh conditions typically encountered in the oil and gas industry. This cable is suitable for data transmission in applications such as downhole gauges, powering larger cores, or serving both purposes.
TEF (Fiber Optic Cables)
Hybrid cables are custom-designed electro-optical cables tailored to meet specific customer requirements. There are two primary design methods:
- Two separate tubes: One tube is dedicated to electrical conductors (TEC), and the other is for optical fibers (TEF). These tubes are positioned side by side in a flat pack.
- A single tube: This design combines a twisted conductor and fiber, all enclosed within a metal tube (FIMT).
These methods ensure the unique needs of each customer are effectively met.
Control Lines
This range includes control lines (hydraulic tubing) specifically designed for harsh environments, such as those encountered during chemical injection or well monitoring. These applications demand strength, corrosion resistance, and reliability. PDT’s control lines are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed ASTM standards.
Prysmian Downhole Technology offers four types of control lines, each produced using a unique manufacturing process. This variety provides distinct advantages that balance cost-effectiveness with technical requirements.
Hybrid Cables
This product range includes cables that integrate instrumentation, power, and fiber optic cables into a single package. This design eliminates the need for multiple cables and saves space at the wellhead.
The PDT team can recommend designs that align with the operating parameters of your application and the necessary surface and downhole interfaces. We also provide a custom design service for situations where a standard design does not cater to specific application needs.
Flatpacks
Flatpacks are designed to simplify the installation process and minimize the number of installation spooler units needed during well completion. They are available in various configurations, such as single-pass and dual-pass encapsulation, which provide enhanced protection. Additionally, individual components and tubes can be color-coded and customized with printed labels for easy identification. If extra crush resistance is necessary, options such as bumper bars and wire rope can be included.
Safety-Strip®
The standard PDT flatpack design features the patented Safety-Strip® encapsulation. This design includes a continuous tear cord, which allows for the safe and quick removal of the outer jacket without damaging the underlying tube. This innovation greatly improves operator safety by eliminating the need for open blades or other mechanical tools for stripping the cable.
Protectors
Protectors are designed to safeguard all control lines and cables along the entire length of the production string, significantly reducing the risk of damage to cables, control lines, or flatpacks. PDT’s Protector portfolio includes clamping and cable protection solutions that shield cables from lateral, axial, and rotational forces in downhole applications. In addition to our standard cross-coupling range, PDT also develops custom solutions tailored for specific, demanding situations.
