Tunnels & Stations

OVERVIEW

Tunnels & Stations

Road and rail tunnels, as well as passenger stations, require reliable electrical power in order to operate safely. The Life Safety Emergency circuits in these environments must be able to remain operative in case of emergencies. Emergency events in enclosed environments, such as tunnels, can include any occurrence like collapse or accidents, but perhaps the most severe and likely emergency is fire. Fire has the potential to endanger people even away from the source, not necessarily because of the extreme heat, but due to the linked effects of smoke and toxic combustion gases. Smoke and toxic gases propelled by heat from fire events can travel faster than people can safely outrun. For this reason, cables in tunnels and passenger stations must meet strict specifications for flame propagation, smoke density, halogen content and toxicity to maximize passenger safety in the event of a fire.

Linking tunnels and stations with compliant products for passenger safety

Prysmian Group has developed new cable designs and materials to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) safety codes for both Transit and Passenger Rail Systems (NFPA 130) as well as Road Tunnels and Bridges (NFPA 502). We offer a full range of NFPA 130 and 502 products dedicated to road tunnels and underground, surface and elevated fixed guideway transit and passenger rail systems, ranging from fire-rated power and communication cables to LSZH cables.
