TransPowr® ACSR/TW Bare Overhead Conductor Trapezoidal Aluminum Conductor (US)
TransPowr® ACSR/TW is a trapezoidal aluminum conductor that is steel-reinforced and consists of concentric-lay-stranded construction. The aluminum strands are shaped like trapezoids, allowing for a more compact arrangement of the aluminum wires.
When designed to maintain the same circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum as a conventional round conductor, the TW conductor has an overall diameter that is 10 to 15 percent smaller. Alternatively, if the TW conductor is designed to have the same overall diameter as a conventional round conductor, it can contain 20 to 25 percent more aluminum cross-sectional area.
ACSR/TW conductors are manufactured according to the latest requirements of ASTM B779. The steel strands form the central core, around which two, three, or four layers of aluminum 1350-H19 wires are stranded. The steel core may consist of a concentric stranded cable made up of 7, 19, or more wires. There are numerous combinations of aluminum and steel strands and layers available. The sizes and constructions listed in the following sections are common examples used in overhead lines.
For ACSR/TW conductors, a standard Class A galvanized coating is typically sufficient for ordinary environmental conditions.
Features and Benefits
TransPowr ACSR/TW conductors have a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. These conductors, including ACSR and ACSR/TW types, have an industry-accepted maximum operating temperature rating of 100°C for short durations. Operating the conductor at elevated temperatures can increase sag and reduce its rated tensile strength.
TransPowr ACSR/TW conductors are well-regarded for their economy, reliability, and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. When compared to conventional round-wire ACSR conductors with the same aluminum circular mil cross-sectional area, ACSR/TW conductors are smaller in overall diameter. This reduced diameter helps to mitigate the effects of ice and wind loading on the conductor.
Furthermore, ACSR/TW conductors are designed to have an equivalent overall diameter, allowing for a larger circular mil cross-sectional area of aluminum within the conductor. This design feature reduces power loss under normal operating conditions and significantly increases the conductor's current-carrying capacity.
